Why did Jesus curse the fig tree?

Most everything Jesus did had a double meaning, like when He told all of the parables. Jesus was hungry and when He saw the fig tree from afar off and it looked like it was going to have fruit on it. When it didn't he cursed it. It was the only thing He cursed in His life and it withered right away. The reason for this is because the fig tree also symbolized hypocrites. If someone says they are following Gods ways but aren't then that is really bad.
