Mitosis is the division of somatic or body cells while meiosis is the division of the gametes (sperm and eggs). Mitosis results in diploid cells (both copies of chromosomes). It essentially makes an identical copy of a cell. Meiosis results in haploid cells (or cells having only one copy of the chromosomes). This is important to create genetic diversity. You get one chromosome from your mom and one from your dad. That is why no two people look alike...except twins of course. But thats an answer for a different question.
